Where to Eat in Langkawi

One of the most exciting parts of travelling is of course eating! Home to a diverse international food scene, Langkawi has plenty of eating options, from local Malay food to pizzas and burgers, this island has it all. During our trip, we ate out all the time and tried out different cuisines.

Here are some of the places to eat in Langkawi that I think is worth sharing:

1 Nasi Dagang Pak Malau

We came here for breakfast after arriving at the airport. This restaurant is situated in the countryside and it has a nice view of paddy fields with mountains in the background. Traditionally, nasi dagang is a Malaysian dish of rice and fish curry only but they also have other choices such as chicken curry, beef rendang, mutton korma and a few others to offer visitors more variety. I ordered the beef rendang which was flavourful yet not too sweet. The meat was tender and it tasted so good! The food was a bit pricey -around RM8-RM15 per plate- since it's popular among tourists.

2 Yellow Cafe Langkawi

This beachfront cafe along Pantai Cenang serves mainly western food -steaks, pizzas, pastas with a wide assortment of milkshakes, cocktails and beer. Just like its name, Yellow Cafe stands out for its yellow theme, with decors, walls, chairs and tables all in the colour yellow! We had dinner here on our first evening while waiting to watch the sunset. This cafe is definitely perfect for those looking for a place to eat with casual ambience and hippie vibe. The food is a little on the pricey side, ranging from RM25 to RM60 but it's average in Cenang Beach considering it's a tourist spot.

We ordered six 16" pizzas and shared among the 12 of us. Honestly there were so many different toppings I couldn't remember which ones we ordered but they were all super delicious!

3 Seashells Chenang

This is another restaurant that offers an amazing paddy field view and it has a traditional Malay village atmosphere. You can choose to dine in at the table seats in the restaurant or on a private pavilion within the paddy field. They serve Nasi Kukus with a variety of meat to choose from -beef, chicken, duck or lamb- and visitors can also choose their preferred cooking methods. We ordered 3 different sets -duck, chicken and sea bass, each has a serving portion of 4 pax and they all come with a generous amount of sides which includes steamed rice, salted egg, onion soup, crackers, fried bean curd, local style salad, shrimp paste and sambal picit. The fragrant rice was delectable and the steamed fish was so appetising, I especially loved it's sauce. The deep fried duck was a little tough and difficult to chew but it still tasted good. Even though we couldn't finish our food in the end but we really enjoyed this authentic traditional meal.

4 Wan Thai Restaurant

Out of all the restaurants we've tried in Langkawi, I think most of us enjoyed eating here the most. Wan Thai Restaurant serves authentic Thai food and it's been recommended by many of my friends and travel sites. We went around 9pm and it was still extremely packed, we were even told to wait for an hour but we managed to get a table after 30 minutes. We ordered tomyum kung, mixed vegetables, fried squid, omelette, fried rice and chicken with cashew nuts. The tomyum soup had a good balance of sour and spicy and it came with a generous amount of squids and prawns. The other dishes were very delectable and tasty too. We wanted to try their mango sticky rice for dessert but they were sold out at that time :'( The price of the food here is quite reasonable, our dinner costed around RM300 only for the 12 of us.

5 Kalut Bar

We wanted to come here for dinner while watching the sunset by the beach on our last night but it rained the whole day so we could only eat indoors :c Normally they would set out beanbags on the sand by evening and put on fire shows or perform live music but sadly we had to miss it. They serve a wide range of beer, cocktails, liquor as well as non-alcoholic beverages. They also have a limited selection of burgers and snacks which were delicious! It's a really great place to chill and have a drink at night with your friends.

6 Kuah Town Seafood

We decided to eat here last minute after finding it on TripAdvisor. It's located in Kuah and you can see photos of the town from the 50s on the walls showing its history. The service was great, the staffs were welcoming and patient to us when we were being very indecisive. Their seafood was very appetising such as their fried squid, seafood tomyum and clams. The price was affordable, we ordered two sets of each dish and it costed us less than RM250.
